Title:
Systems Engineering Your MBSE and Digital Engineering Deployment

Abstract:

Model-based systems engineering is many things. It is architecture and analytics, communication and engineering, methods and tools. It represents a change in technique and fidelity for systems engineering and those who practice it. Digital Engineering takes this to another level as we seek to transform the engineering enterprise.

As individuals and organizations deploy MBSE and Digital Engineering, they fall into several traps. Many believe both to be tooling or technical problems. While there are certainly technical dimensions and tool selection s is key, the adoption and deployment of MBSE and DE are far bigger. They span technology, people, training, and change at an individual, project, and potentially enterprise level.

MBSE and DE are not one size fits all. To be successful, both need to be deployed in a manner that is fit for purpose considering both the problem and the enterprise. If we practice what we preach and bring a systems engineering approach to deploying MBSE and Digital Engineering, we can fundamentally change the impact and increase the likelihood of success. Assessing the environment and drawing the system boundary…defining the scope, eliciting requirements, and identifying constraints…considering behaviors and deploying the solution – all are critical to defining the right problem and solving the problem right. All are key in avoiding many of the traps along the way. Building upon good systems engineering practice and practical lessons learned from deployments across industry – some successful, some challenged – we can identify best practices going forward as we continue to apply and advance engineering approaches within our organizations.

Bio:
For over 30 years, David Long has helped organizations increase their systems engineering proficiency while simultaneously working to advance the state of the art. David was the founder and president of Vitech where he led the development of innovative, industry-leading methods and software to help organizations engineer next-generation systems.

Throughout his career, David has played a key technical and leadership role in advancing and expanding the practice of systems engineering. He has worked with government and commercial organizations around the world as they assess, adopt, and deploy new methods and tools to enhance their engineering enterprise. David is a frequent presenter at industry events worldwide delivering keynotes and tutorials spanning introductory systems engineering, the advanced application of model-based systems engineering, digital engineering, and the future of engineering systems. His experiences and efforts led him to co-author the book A Primer for Model-Based Systems Engineering to help spread the fundamental concepts of this key approach to modern challenges. An INCOSE Fellow and Expert Systems Engineering Professional, David was the 2014/2015 president of INCOSE.

David holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science and Mechanics, as well as a master’s degree in Systems Engineering from Virginia Tech.
