Keeping the Digital Thread from Unravelling: Opportunities and Challenges in MBSE

The Digital Thread is a key component and concept in Model-Based Systems Engineering. A fully realized digital thread provides the “use of internet-driven knowledge representation and immersive technologies enabling highly efficient and shared human understanding of systems in a virtual environment that span the full life cycle from concept through development, manufacturing, operations, and support.” (SE Vision 2025) We will also examine challenges, risks, opportunities and threats along the path to the realization of digital engineering.

Matthew Hause is a Principal Engineer at SSI, a member of the UAF group and OMG SysML V2 specification team and was a member of the OMG Architecture Board for 10 years. He has been developing multi-national complex systems for over 40 years. He started out working in the power systems industry. He has experience in defense systems, process control, manufacturing, factory automation, communications, SCADA, distributed control, office automation and many other areas of technical and real-time systems. He has written over 100 technical papers on architectural modeling, project management, model-based engineering, human factors, safety critical systems development, virtual team management, product line engineering, systems of systems, systems and software development with UML, SysML and UAF. He has been a regular presenter at INCOSE, the IEEE, BCS, the IET, the OMG, AIAA, DoD Enterprise Architecture, etc. Matthew studied Electrical Engineering at the University of New Mexico and Computer Science at the University of Houston, Texas.

Troy Peterson, SSI Vice President, and INCOSE’s Future and Transformation champion, is a recognized leader in developing model based solutions to speed innovation and solve complex systems challenges. He has led the delivery of numerous complex systems and methodologies while at SSI, as a Booz Allen Fellow and Lead Engineer at Ford Motor Company. His experience spans academic, non-profit, commercial and government environments across all lifecycle phases. Troy received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University, an MS in Technology Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an advanced graduate certificate in Systems Design and Management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also holds INCOSE CSEP, PMI PMP, and ASQ Six Sigma Black Belt Certifications.
