Title:
Staircase to Utopia: Advances in Technology Roadmapping
Abstract:
This presentation will present a new state of the art framework for technology roadmapping based on a similar approach implemented at Airbus from 2017-2018 and demonstrated using the example of stratospheric solar-powered electric aircraft. The framework includes four steps beginning with a quantitative assessment of the current state of technology and competitive analysis and concludes with a risk-optimized R&D portfolio with specific Figure-of-Merit (FOM) based targets.
The presentation will summarize the 36 technologies for which roadmaps have been developed in 2019 and 2020 as part of MIT’s new graduate class 16.887/EM.427 on Technology Roadmapping and Development. These technologies can be classified across a 5x5 technology grid and related to each other as part of a network of linked technologies.
Bio:
Olivier de Weck is a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He earned degrees in Industrial Engineering from ETH Zurich (dipl. Ing. ‘93) and Aerospace Systems from MIT (SM ’99, PhD ’01) where he is the faculty director of the Engineering Systems Laboratory (http://systems.mit.edu) and the Bernard M. Gordon MIT Engineering Leadership Program (http://gelp.mit.edu).
His main research is in Systems Engineering with a focus on how complex technological systems are designed and optimized and how they evolve over time. He has authored or co-authored over 400 publications for which he has been recognized with twelve best paper awards since 2004. He is a Fellow of INCOSE and AIAA. He served as Editor-in-Chief for the journal Systems Engineering from 2013-2018 and is a former Senior Vice President of Technology Planning and Roadmapping at Airbus.
