Resiliency System Engineering in a Multi-UAV System of Systems (SoS)


This presentation addresses the process for “ architecting in” desired attributes into a given system.  Specifically, the example process of defining and quantifying resilience attributes into a system will be described

Resiliency is defined as “the ability of a system to adapt and perform effectively across a wide range of operational contexts, where context is defined by mission, environment, threat and force disposition”.

In general a resilient system must be able to effectively react to anticipated disruptions (flexibility) and unanticipated disruptions (adaptability).

The Resilient System Engineering (RSE) process will be used to analyze and incorporate resilience attributes into the architecture of a Multi-UAV System of Systems (SoS) tasked to locate agents in distress for a Search and Rescue (SAR) application. 

Resiliency is not inherent, and must be architected into the UAV, payload, algorithms, and network especially in the areas of communications, ad-hoc networking, and path planning. 


Dr. Dano has been working as a Systems Engineer/Architect at Sanders/BAE Systems for over 22 years. During that time he has served in numerous systems engineering roles including systems engineering lead, design lead, IV&V lead, and principle investigator on multiple internal R&D efforts. Over the past 8 years he served as System Architect/Chief Engineer on multiple advanced defense systems and currently leads the System Architecture Community of Practice. 

Prior to BAE Systems, Dr. Dano was a 1987 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, majoring in Physics, and served in the United States Marine Corps as an Electronics Counter Measures Officer (ECMO) flying in the EA-6B Prowler. In 1997, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Electrical Engineering and Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences, focusing on modeling E-M scattering from oceanic breaking waves.  

Dr. Dano has been an INCOSE member since 2011, is a member of the Physics Honor Society (ΣΠΣ), and a Senior member of IEEE.
