7:45-8:00 PM: Discussion and Wrap-Up
Abstract: Draper has been performing model-based engineering and simulation for many years, and began investigating the application of MBSE with SysML in 2010. This started as a grass roots effort by a relatively small group of engineers to learn and teach each other SysML, evaluate MBSE tools, and experiment by creating various types of models. Beginning in late 2014, momentum increased with funded projects requiring the use of SysML, and the development of a broad corporate vision for the implementation of MBE. Soon thereafter, Draper became involved in MBSE initiatives associated with the Navy SSP, INCOSE, and other industry and professional organizations. In 2015, Draper kicked off a 3-year strategic investment in Model-Based Engineering, which includes a significant MBSE component. Over the past few years, Draper has held many formal multi-day MBSE/MagicDraw training sessions for a large cross-section of our engineering staff, and we are currently applying SysML to several projects for government and commercial customers. We are continuing to develop the tools and infrastructure required to enable and facilitate MBSE across different domains and apply it to more phases of the system lifecycle. Some current initiatives include the development of executable system models, MBSE/PLM integration, multi-domain tool integration, participation in the Navy Systems Engineering Transformation Initiative, and contributing to the development of SysML v2. To better support our user community, we are also working on the definition of formal modeling guidelines, patterns, and templates. We are coordinating our approach and methods with various government agencies, industry partners, and academia to select best practices, achieve consistency with collaborators, document lessons learned, and address MBSE challenges.
Speaker: Chris Massa has been a member of INCOSE since 2008. Since joining Draper in 2011, Chris has supported or led several tasks related to commercial space programs and the Navy Trident program in the areas of software development, simulation, systems engineering, system modeling, and integration and test. For the past four years, Chris has focused on developing Draper’s Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) capability and infrastructure by creating models of various systems, and supporting other engineers engaged in model development tasks. He serves as the Draper representative to the Navy Systems Engineering Transformation System Modeling IPT. Before joining Draper, Chris worked in various contributing and leadership roles at OrbitalATK (now Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems), Boeing, and AeroAstro, developing and launching spacecraft and launch vehicles. He received his Master of Science degree from Stanford University and Bachelor of Science degree from M.I.T., both in Aeronautics and Astronautics. He is an INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP), a board member of the New England chapter of INCOSE, a member of the INCOSE Space Systems Working Group, a member of the AIAA Systems Engineering Technical Committee, and a member of IEEE. He is also active in the development of SysML v2.
