Abstract: Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) has become a hot topic in the last months. The MBSE approach was first popularized by the INCOSE in 2007 and aims at having systems engineers transitioning from a document-centric approach to a more formalized approach using models to represent their systems. MBSE is envisioned to be the next shift to enhance significantly our engineering capacities so that engineers can cope with the steadily growing systems' complexity. Thales (https://www.thalesgroup.com) started their MBSE journey back in 2005, being mature on modeling and having already developed advanced engineering practices. As field systems engineers rejected SysML tools, they took the decision to invest significantly in a innovation scheme to create a pioneering MBSE method (Arcadia) and a tool (Melody). In 2014, Melody became Capella, the name that was chosen when open-sourcing Melody. In this presentation, Stephane Lacrampe will present Thales' journey to create an in-house MBSE tool and the rationale that lead to open-source it. We will explore the different maturity steps and collaboration activities that took place along the way, the financial implication and the underlying business model and strategy that first made Capella a success within Thales; up to large-scale adoption by organizations worldwide as illustrated by the recent announce from Siemens PLM Software to integrate Capella in System Modeling Workbench for Teamcenter.
Speaker: Stéphane Lacrampe co-founded Obeo in 2005, an independent software vendor based in France that became a leading provider of open source modeling software for system and software engineers, enterprise architects and domain modeling experts. He acted as the CEO of the company for the last 12 years. He is now director of Obeo Canada and is in charge of the business development in North America for the company. Stéphane Lacrampe has a great experience on business and partnerships development using open source business models. He was a board director of the Eclipse Foundation for 2 years, and also managed the partnership with Thales that lead to the creation and the open-sourcing of the Sirius technology (https://www.eclipse.org/sirius). He is also actively involved in the development of the Capella MBSE tool ecosystem (https://polarsys.org/capella/) and is an elected member of the Capella Industrial Consortium as well as an INCOSE member.
